Cannot commit owners.list

I was told to update owners.list to fix a mismatch of my email address
with bugzilla. However when I try to commit I get an error message:

> $ cvs commit -m "fix my email so bugzilla and owners.list are in sync" owners.list

> cvs [commit aborted]: correct above errors first!

What is going wrong here? Where are the first 3 lines coming from?
