Thank you for helping me with this. I'm going through something similar on
Fedora for blender. Unfortunately the package maintainers pop in to tell me
what's wrong with my package (in a general sense) but when I ask for specifics
I hear nothing... It can get very frustrating. 

I'm a long time Fedora user so I'm not planning on going anywhere. 

A tangent to this package is mlt (and the openshot requirement, mlt-python).
F14/Rawhide seems to be stuck on 0.5.4 while F13 is on 0.5.10, however, in
either case neither package has been updated since 2009.

I've got the current git download (0.7.0) and am attempting to build it.
