logged this error with redhat
[Bug 736912] kdm forgets to quit plymouth if Xorg fails to start

I have been loading the NVIDIA driver from the .run file directly from 
nvidia and plymouth fails to quit on a new driver, so access to local 
shell is blocked,
so ssh from another box to load driver.
