I'm having difficuilties getting my ATi 9.9-1 Xorg to start, it hangs at a black screen

Are other packages including the kernel up2date ?
rpm -qa kernel\* \*catal\*|sort

You will probably have an xorg log. Please post it on a pastebin like:
