I'm having difficuilties getting my ATi 9.9-1 Xorg to start, it hangs at a black screen

I was able to remedy this problem with the following: aticonfig --acpi-
services=off

However when I ran glxgears, I notice that my framerates drop from 24** to 
17**

Also after successfully getting to a desktop, I got a kerneloops message 
littered with [fglrx]
