At least ffmpeg you use is old. Afaik the 0.5 release corresponds to
revision
~17500.
Sorry, that was bad wording on my part. The bundled software has newer
functionality, or changed API. In the case of ffmpeg, HandBrake will not
compile without the LATM patch.
Can't you get these patches (that you mention in that email)
accepted
into their respective upstream projects?
In some cases it's already in progress - the ffmpeg upstream is already working
on the LATM parser:

But as a general answer, "yes", the hope is to get all this upstreamed because
it's a pain. I was hoping to get the package approved and then work on the
upstream issues.
Both libdca and libmp4v2 are definitely disappointing - they are much more
tightly coupled to a specific version than I had hoped for.
