As far as I'm aware, it is indeed safe to avoid optimization flags when linking
today. With link-time optimizations being available in GCC 4.6, it might not
be quite as safe in the future.
But that is not now. And maybe there never will be any lto flags added to
optflags. I'll simplify the patch as you suggest.
