Ugh, that patch is horribly inappropriate, the program should be fixed to
support non-mmap ALSA access instead. It's needed even for some hardware! And
PulseAudio also requires it, at least until the native PulseAudio backend
works.
The author might add support for it in the future. However, as I, Fernando
Lopez-Lezcano, and other audio creation related folks said, Jack is what you
need for an audio session with a DAW. This is not an mp3 or avi player that
everybody can use. It has a specific target audience. People who use DAW's have
appropriate hardware (semi-pro or pro sound cards) most of the time.
If the PortAudio backend works, please enable that one, as PortAudio
now
supports non-mmap ALSA.
The author explicitly asked us to remove it from a Linux package.
As for SSE, the rule is that i586 packages need to work on all i586
CPUs,
period.
I heard that before too. But I can't find it in the guidelines. I also asked
folks at #fedora-devel on IRC. Multiple people said, SSE should be enabled on
ix86. Can you point me to the guideline that says the opposite?
However, I do believe that my explanation in comment #14 is pretty valid. In
short: I do do audio recording. My experience says older hardware is useless
for such purposes. They create too much latency.
