Hey folks,
Due to a variety of reasons, I've been scaling back my involvement in Fedora,
MythTV, related projects, and Linux in general, outside of work. As a side-effect
of that, I can't really justify paying as much as I do for internet access anymore,
and the only thing preventing me from dropping my relatively high-priced
business class service for something consumer-grade and 1/3 the cost is the
fact that the one and only active rpm fusion build system sits on that pipe. I'd
like to see another system (or systems) elsewhere brought up sooner than
later, so builds can be migrated to them, at which point, I can retire the box at
my house, and not drop the extra money every month for the pipe and the
power to keep the box running.
Of course, its probably possible to keep the builder going on a non-biz pipe,
but it might violate terms of use or some such thing, and/or not be nearly as
reliably reachable... Either way, I'd like to drop the internet bill by the first of
December.

I use my server on a residential internet plan, I think the volume should be
low enough to avoid any trouble right? hopefully no ports will be blocked,
I hate ISP's that do that.

Yeah, it would be a great excuse to upgrade to a business plan but I
just can afford it. Plus I don't have an extra machine to designate as
a server, just my desktop and my MythTV box.

that much traffic involved is there? All it takes is a VM for a builder,
but all i've got is a old P4 with 3 vm's running on it already:)

Well, even if they don't block the ports it's a violation of the Terms
of Use, which I'm doing already but mostly just ssh traffic.
I'm not sure how much traffic there is, but it does have to download
the package plus all the packages needed to build the package and then
upload the results, right? My DSL only has about 25KB of upload
bandwidth...
It would be nice to have a full Fedora and RPM Fusion mirror though :)

what are the requirements for the builder, and what is the
typical usage, maybe ten relatively slow machines over slow
lines, which I guess every second of us could donate, would be
better than one fast machine on a fast line?
is there any howto for setting up the builder?

Yeah, being 64-bit is a must, so it can build both x86_64 and ix86 packages. Any
cpu more powerful than an atom is probably serviceable. More cores is better,
but not absolutely required. Not sure how many really large and lengthy compiles
there are amongst the package set.
But how much RAM and disk space is required?
Not sure what the minimum requirements are. I'd say at least 2GB of RAM
and 100GB of space for builds. Ideally, there's also a local fedora, epel,
rpmfusion and whatever else mirror, which is another 500GB+, depending on
how complete the mirror is. But if there's speedy access to relatively
nearby existing mirrors, that's probably fine too. There aren't all that
many packages to build most of the time.
Who will need to have which kind of shell access?
The rpm fusion sysadmins, which presently amounts to Nicolas Chauvet and
Xavier Lamien, as far as I know, are the only ones who should need any
shell access. They will need to be able to adjust mock/plague/koji configs
and daemons, not sure if there's anything else.

Since no one has stepped up yet I have a proposal but I don't know how
easy it will be to accomplish.
I'm willing to offer up my desktop machine with the following requirements:
1. At least 5 to 10 others in total do the same
2. Building packages would be assigned to all machines in a round
robin approach.
3. I can shut down the builds by window or manually. I do occasionally
use my machine for gaming.
Another option in addition to the above would be to allow uploading of
packages from contributors machines to buildsys. I would suggest
making it possible from cvs/make where the packages would get built on
the local machine and then be uploaded.
I'm sure there are some technical hurdles but a distributed approach
may keep us from having to come up with a dedicated builder.

to upgrade my service a bit.

For a short-term solution, this would need a little bit of development of
the Plague build service.
The server (the "builder manager") can handle remote builders, which go
offline temporarily. It pings them regularly for a sign of life, but it
doesn't do any appropriate scheduling of build jobs to distribute the load
equally to all available builders. The builder with the most free build
slots is considered the most powerful and wins. The number of free build
slots is the only criterion. How many slots a builder offers is not
configurable, but hardcoded depending on number of CPUs. That would need
to change, too.
Experimenting with many more builders distributed to contributors'
machines would have made a lot of sense years ago. Though, it could be
that development in that area would have competed with koji. The Plague
builders as used by RPM Fusion (and as had been used by Fedora Extras) are
"passive", which means they must be reachable from the outside. The
"active" builders, which would query the server themselves and could hide
behind a tightened up firewall, have been a feature of the unreleased
Plague 0.5.0 development version only.
Also to consider: Would each builder work with its own repository config?
For example, using mostly default mock configs with mirrorlist pointing
at the repos? Or would the project create an own central mirror for all
needed repos and have builders use that one? If not, what technique is
used (and probably not implemented yet) to have builders wait for certain
required packages to become available in a repo (similar to koji wait-repo)?

that's my take right now. I don't really have any idea how much there is to

I checked on upgrading to business class DSL so I can stop violating
my TOS. Price wise it's fine. BellSouth is running a deal I can get
6Mbit DSL for $30/mo+tax for a year, which is cheaper than what I'm
paying now. The downside is it only gets me 512kb up.

Fedora <= 15 has been tested and kept working with Plague. On F-16 I've
not tested Plague yet.
About how to set up a builder (and/or the server), it would help if the
current config files (except for the certificates!), including any mock
config customisations, would be made available somewhere. As examples and
for reviewing purposes -- and to create a template which to reuse for
new builder configuration files. Surely they are kept somewhere, so
files like build target config files are simply copied to all builders
instead of created from scratch.

That's what I was thinking the rpmfusion-builder package could be used
for, to pull in the right packages with simple Requires: and then

They are currently looking for a possible machine, therefore something
might be possible there.

I can set up a builder on my home server, if necessary. However my uplink
is only 512kbps at the moment and the server is a 64bit dual-core Atom,
so not exactly a speed demon. :)

I can set up a builder on my home server, if necessary. However my uplink
is only 512kbps at the moment and the server is a 64bit dual-core Atom,
so not exactly a speed demon. :)
I tried running a similar atom box as a builder at one point. It was horrendous,
the thing kept choking on builds, took ages to complete anything, often got
itself completely hung due to excessive swapping, would oom-kill, etc. But if
you had tons of RAM in it (read: more than 4GB), it *might* be okay. I'd be
more inclined to roll with what Adrian is cooking up. :)

Building the kernel takes right at 2 hours.

As a point of reference, I get decent build times on my AMD X2 Kuma

The current host is actually right about the same specs. The atom might have
only had 2GB, not certain. But the cpus were definitely overwhelmed.

Note that plague will, iirc, queue both the x86_64 and i686 builds at the same
time. And so plague thought the dual-core atom with hyperthreading turned on
should be doing two simultaneous -j4 builds. It was less bad with two -j2 builds,
but still pretty bad. The atom is flat-out a terrible cpu for anything even remotely
computational. A dual-core Athlon X2 handles the load just fine.
I think a quad core with close to 3GHz speeds would be ideal :)
Remember, clock speed ain't everything. I'd rather have a low-power 2GHz
quad-core i7, which would still trounce an Athlon X2.

Well you can do that when you don't build everything :) I tried Gentoo
and overall liked it but it did get tiresome building everything from
source. Of course I had a much slower system back then.

It takes much less time to build a kernel configured specifically for your
machine, with only the modules you need (compiled in or as module shouldn't
matter), than to build a distro kernel, which has to build almost all
modules in existence. But of course, you have to know what you're doing to
configure a custom kernel, and it also takes time (YOUR time, not just your
computer's) to configure it.

I know ... I just deemed it an interesting comparison, although
completely useless
But of course, you have to know what you're doing

I haven't seen any progress in the past few days, so let me ask
what is the status?
- if still needed, I've set up a virtual machine (2 cores of i7 @
2.66 GHz, 2 GiB RAM, 100 GiB HDD), just tell me what should I put
into /etc/plague/builder/plague-builder.cfg ...
