Hi, everybody,
What's needed to get build tools out for el6?
I'm looking to help test the spl/zfs modules on CentOS 6.
I found that
kmodtool
seems unchanged since f11, so I just pulled that from another repo, but:
buildsys-build-rpmfusion
(buildsys-build-rpmfusion-kerneldevpkgs-newest-x86_64)
looks like it's tightly coupled to the kernel version, so using a
different one isn't going to help here.
Those are two I saw in this case, but in general a push of the build
tools for el6 would be great.

We aren't building kmod for EL-6 but elrepo.org does.
If someone volunteer to catch up to their kABI implementation in
kmodtool, then that will worth to enable kmod in RPM Fusion for EL and
to merge their work.

Huh, I didn't even know about elrepo... I don't run EL at the moment.

I've already got SPL and ZFS packages that should conform to the
guidelines, that's the ones he's trying to use but EL doesn't have all
the dependencies. I'm guessing kmodtool is one of them, and the
buildsys-build* package?

Ok, the elrepo guys are willing to host it but I'd pretty much have to
use their kmod system so I'd have to maintain two separate sets of
packages.
At this point I'm not entirely sure we really need to use them. I've
been able to build kmods for EL6 with a tweak to my spec file and
building an EL6 package of kmodtool.
Since EL has an almost completely stable kernel ABI there will not
need to be frequent needs to rebuild for kernel updates. I added the
following to my spec file:
# For el6 builds with stable kernel ABI
%if %{defined el6}
%global kernels 2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.x86_64
BuildRequires: kernel-headers
BuildRequires: kernel-devel
%endif
I'm basically assuming the current kernel version. Since "kernels" is
defined it doesn't trigger the BuildRequires for
builsys-build-rpmfusion-kerneldevpkgs.
I'm sure I must be missing something, so where are the pitfalls? :)

given kernel doesn't work the same as fedora. Mostly because there is
different channel where one grab the kernel update from RHN and
another wait for CentOS/SL/whatever.

I guess this is where I'm confused. What specifically needs to be
updated? From what Phil at elrepo told me, it's really not "their"
kABI, it's provided by RHEL. It guarantees a core set of kernel
symbols that will not change, and others that are unlikely to change
except on upgrades (6.1, 6.2, 6.3, etc.)

But isn't the point of the kABI so that you don't have to rebuild
kernel modules on a kernel update? We should be able to build the kmod
once regardless of kernel updates except for possible upgrades
mentioned above.
I would think that the more difficult part would be having multiple
kmods available depending on the EL version you're running, 6.0, 6.1,
6.2, etc.
