Hi,
I recently update one laptop with Fedora 14 and nvidia graphics drives,
and once more I don't got X after kernel upgrade.
As my experience in rpmfusion, I got akomd which build kmod and
everything works great .
So to avoid this happens often after upgrade kernel, I suggest on wiki
howto , example: http://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia
recommend use akmods specially for "kmods of video graphics"
May I update the wiki Howto/nVidia ?

likely that
rpmfusion repository isn't upgraded at the same time as the fedora
version. Or that anaconda (still using kmod1) still beleive the
dependency has been resolved with the old kmod for the old kernel.
There is also this bug, that might still happen:

Can you create a new bugzilla with your output from anaconda.log

yeah , but how many times after yum update, you update kernel and
rpmfusion is not update kmods .
I live more happy with akomds that works in did.
also for custom kernel that some time I compile.

I mean I did a yum -y update , not a upgrade , no anaconda.log.

You're supposed to upgrade using gnome-packagekit or KPackageKit, which will
display a list of updates. If you see a kernel update without a matching
kmod update in the list, just uncheck it, where's the problem?
And of course, I can only suggest to try Nouveau, which is the driver for
NVidia hardware which Fedora actually ships and supports(*).

To much work or a "common" user don't know that.
A "common" user, wants that updates be automatic.
As these "common" users and I just use stable versions and use it on
work. Normally, we don't have any trouble with any update.
And this trouble is not easy to solve.
First , know that computer don't boot and hangs on start X because
missed kmod, and you need switch to VT , when it is possible ...
So with akmods, as a "common" user, I live more happy because kmod
updates don't fail (often :)). And I know some times rpmfusion fails in
general terms (don't want discuss that). Just emphasize that if I have a
ndivia or a ATI and wants use properties drives. The installation of
gcc, kernel-devel and akmods, it worth to have better quality of
service.
2nd I may want do, automatic updates .
And Akmods in general are working very well, the same thing I could not
say around 2003 2004 IIRC.

* install a compiler toolchain,
* install kernel development headers,
* wait on system boot for the kernel module to compile and
* deal with any resulting errors, because some kernel API changed and the
akmod was not updated for it.
akmods are the wrong solution for the average user, binary kmods are the
correct solution. Building software from source on the user's machine in a
binary distribution is an ugly hack, not a solution for anything.

But the current solution is still far from perfect and users way to
often run into problems -- IOW, there is lot's of room for improvements.
For example, we could have a small script or yum plugin that could get
called on kernel install that could check the repos on the master server
or the testing repos for matching kmod packages for example. That's not
to hard, but I never got around to implement it/lost interest over time.

In stable releases not often change kernel major version , better , and
it is better than not boot .
which happens to me all the time .
with nvidia drive (yes I want ndvidia properties drive) .

rpmfusion-free-updates-testing.
