And why is it not in Fedora (I cannot find it in Fedora and also there seems

These days the current version is in Livna and Livna's svn.

in Fedora, so it must have been somewhere (in the rpm macros package?).
But when Fedora kicked separately packages kernel modules I started to
develop it further in livna -- it made no sense to develop a Livna
only-solution in Fedora and just complicates things.

kmodtool goes way back to the fedora.us days. I'm sure there was a
review for it back then.

In Fedora one was forced to use a copy of it in the srpm/cvs branch, there was
no package containing it.

Imho developing it in Fedora cvs was not good. Can you maybe use fedorahosted
to develop it? Or host it on somehow else, which makes sure where to get it,
how to report bugs and send patches?
Nevertheless I cannot see how adding it as a package to Fedora instead of
rpmfusion would make it more complicate. For users of kmodtool, it would be a
lot easier. Also I understand the founding priciples[1] in a way, that
rpmfusion does not contain packages, that could be in Fedora instead. And the
dkms infrastructure is also in Fedora.

So how is one supposed to create a kmod package (e.g. VirtualBox-OSE-kmod) for
RPM Fusion if there is no way to get to kmodtool?
Btw. kmodinstdir_postfix should propably be called
kmodinstdir_suffix. "Postfix" is afaik not an english word.

Heh, I think suffix is more common than postfix, unless you're talking

Well, to be precise: I started to work on kmod improvements to make live
for repo-maintainers and contributers easier in the first place. That
included things like: removing the hardcoded kernel-version in the spec
file, make it possible to build for different kernel-version in one go
(as Fedora xen-kernels have a different version than the main kernel),
make is possible to support older kernels in parallel to the up2date
ones better and make it easier to build for non-fedora-kernels.
That was realized with the kmod2 stuff livna started to use for F8. Then
all that was needed for dkms-like support was a kmod.srpm in a known
place and a script that rebuilds it during bootup using rpmbuild if
needed. During December I finally sat down and wrote it (I actually
started to work on it when I wanted to work on the rpmfusion infra but
the xen instances were down again). The whole concept is called akmods
and can be tested in livna developement (aka livna for rawhide). I
didn't announce it properly yet -- lack of time and akmods likely still
needs some improvements bugfixes. But it seems to work, as I got one
report already that a akmod (a rpm that contains a kmod.srpm) doesn't
build in rawhide.

Sorry, I should have mentioned it earlier in the thread that kmodtool is
only in Livna for F8 and later only. Sorry. It's written indirectly on
quoted wiki page , but not really obvious.

Well, we nevertheless could change this if we want, but that would
require adjustments in all kmod packages. I'm wondering if that's worth
the trouble.

I was under the impression that akmods was the way to go. I just submitted a
package using it (blcr) to rpmfusion.
I'm using this on F8 with fine results (so far).
