nvidia module not loading
by Robin Laing
Hello,
Latest F24 kernel update with akmods. The kernel modules were created
by akmods but when trying to boot the system, the kernel module is not
found.
Even trying to run modprobe nvidia fails.
sudo modprobe nvidia
password:
modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found in directory
/lib/modules/4.7.5-200.fc24.x86_64
If I type in modprobe and nvidia, tab complete gives me a list of nvidia
modules to load.
./4.7.5-200.fc24.x86_64/extra/nvidia/nvidia-uvm.ko
./4.7.5-200.fc24.x86_64/extra/nvidia/nvidia-drm.ko
./4.7.5-200.fc24.x86_64/extra/nvidia/nvidia.ko
./4.7.5-200.fc24.x86_64/extra/nvidia/nvidia-modeset.ko
All logs just say the the module is not found as above.
Any suggestions?

smplayer.spec does not require mplayer
by Saša Janiška
Hello,
I’m new Fedora user tesing f25-beta on my netbook and like it very much
(preference over e.g. openSUSE’s Tumbleweed) considering to very soon
switch my desktop (from Debian Sid) to it. Since Fedora does not include
some multimedia packages to which I’m accustomed from other distros, I
have added rpmfusions (non)free repos and installed smplayer in order to
be able to play some videos not playable by Parole.
Now, after inspecting smplayer.spec I see that it contains:
# smplayer without mplayer is quite useless
Recommends: mplayer
and, no wonder, my system does not contain mplayer.
Otoh, inspecting e.g. openSUSE’s smplayer.spec it contains:
# Either mpv >= 0.6.2 or MPlayer >= 1.0rc4_r32607.
Requires: mpv >= 0.6.2
https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/openSUSE:Factory/smplayer/sm...)
The confusing part is that when I’ve consulted rpm docs at
http://rpm.org/wiki/PackagerDocs/Dependencies there is the following:
“So installing a package containing Recommends: foo should cause the
dependency solver to also select a package that is named foo or that
Provides: foo, assuming one exists and its selection does not lead to
unresolvable dependencies.”
So, the question is why “dnf install smplayer” does not install
’mplayer’?
I’m, so far, very happy with Fedora and plan to fully migrate to it and
installing it on my friends/relatives machines, but, atm, my rpm/dnf
skills are pretty rough… :-(
Sincerely,
Gour

Blank screen with 357.67
by Richard Shaw
On my MythTV box I got a blank screen after updating to 357.67...
# lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK208 [GeForce GT
730] (rev a1)
I fixed it remotely by downgrading but I couldn't find anything wrong
looking through the log files. Xorg seemed happy...
I'll have to dig some more before having anything worth submitting a bug
report.
Thanks,
Richard

RE: Nvidia drivers
by Stephen Adler
Is there a fall back mode to run gnome in the old xorg mode? If so I would stick to that.

I am not able to install akmod-nvidia drivers on Fedora 25. Is there a
certain way it has to be done now that xwayland is being used.

Nvidia drivers for Fedora 25
by Lawrence Graves
Is there a projected date as to when the nvidia drivers for Fedora 25
will be released. I have tried on several occasions to install
akmod-nvidia with no success. Is there a special way it has to be
install since the release of xwayland?

mplayer and vlc errors in F25 and rawhide (F26) after friday and saturday's updates
by stan
This is a forward of an email that I sent to the Fedora test list,
because I was having a problem with mplayer (and vlc).
Hi,
I'm running F25. On Friday, mplayer worked as expected. I then
updated to the latest updates (I have updates testing enabled). I
didn't use mplayer again, and the next day, updated to the latest
updates again. After that mplayer doesn't work properly. It runs way
too slowly, and any video I play runs at about 1/8 speed. It complains
that my system is too slow to run the video, a video is has run before
without problem. I experimented, and the same behavior is true of vlc
when run in X. However, when I run mplayer in a virtual console (with
-vo fbdev2), it works properly except that it doesn't respond to
keyboard commands when using the full screen. This might be another
unrelated error, since its been a long time since I did that. ffplay
works properly in X, but doesn't play the complete video, as it gets
seek errors towards the end of the video.
There was no kernel update, so this is not a problem with the video
driver (radeon in my case).
To look at this further, I then went to my rawhide installation and
updated it to the latest version as of Saturday night. The same
problems occurred there, so this is something common to both F25 and
F26.
I then returned to F25, and pulled the mplayer subversion repository,
and compiled it to see if it would point to a problem. It compiled
without problem, but the executable still has the problem.
There were hundreds of updates, so it is hard to say which is the
culprit, but I did notice that the xorg packages were updated. I also
saw on the devel list that they excluded some libraries that had
been previously included. I don't know if that would be relevant.
I have no idea where to go from here. These programs aren't working
for me, but I'm not sure why. I don't think it it the program itself,
but a library it is using that changed. But *which* library?

nvidia 304 and fc23: black screens after updating today
by John Pilkington
This is the same system that had nvidia problems during its fc22 > fc23
upgrade. That was reported here and solved on 30 June. Since then it
has been working well, but after installing the new packages today I get
black screens with kernels 4.7.3, 4.7.5 and 4.7.6
'dnf downgrade xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-304xx --allowerasing' apparently
completed but then akmods-shutdown errored. After re-upgrading,
akmods-shutdown completed, and the nvidia flash screen flashes, but then
all goes black again, for all installed kernels. I'm using tty2.
Xorg.0.log looks ok apart from 'ACPI: failed to connect to the ACPI
event daemon' and suggests looking at the ConnectToAcpid and
AcpidSocketPath options, which I have not yet done. I don't know if
this is likely to be the real problem.
