One thing that may get you more information....
Boot to singled user mode, also known as runlevel-3. This will give you a non-GUI login
screen. Login as yourself and then use "startx".
Or, with the blank screen, try bringing up a Virtual Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2) and login and
check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors.
