ldd /usr/bin/mplayer{,accelerated} |grep vdpau ?

It seems that mplayer doesn't link to the wrapper, this is a bug in mplayer.

The next stable nvidia driver will change the path of the vdpau
backend, it will then request the wrapper library as 0.3.
