Hi,
first note, akmods only exist in rpmfusion-free-updates-testing

Installing:
akmods noarch 0.4.0-4.fc17 rpmfusion-free-updates-testing
18 k

second on mock build root, dir subsys doesn't not exit.

mkdir /var/lock/subsys/

akmods --kernels 3.3.0-8.fc17.x86_64
build without problem

ls /var/cache/akmods/VirtualBox-OSE/
4.1.12-2.1-for-3.3.0-8.fc17.x86_64.log
kmod-VirtualBox-OSE-3.3.0-8.fc17.x86_64-4.1.12-2.fc17.1.x86_64.rpm
VirtualBox-OSE-kmod-debuginfo-4.1.12-2.fc17.1.x86_64.rpm

also no problems in i386.

If I can give my opinion ,
buildsys-build-rpmfusion-kerneldevpkgs-current is blocking build to a
specific kernel and should be possible to build to the available kernel.
Other opinion is just have one F17 , don't see advantages in having
testing branch, but is just my opinion I may not have the all picture.

Thanks,
