Your issue seems related to the latest vlc probably using a different
video rendering that previous vlc.
Can you reproduce with a new vlc config directory ? (ie: remove ~/.config/vlc)
Also can you report which hardware/driver you are using ?

ps: playing a dvd on latest vlc on fedora 24 works for me with nvidia.
