For me, Fedora 22, Nvidia card.
When it fails, switch to a terminal. Log in as root
#akmods --force
Solved it for me.
A suggestion (not for Gnome, but KDE) was to use the gui update
method. Might be worth trying if it happens again?

Hi Peeps,
I've been a bit lax of late, and not monitored this list for ages, oddly my
Fedora 21 has failed following the latest Nvid driver update, I do it via
the normal sudo yum update, then it gets to just before it's about to
display a desktop and screen flickers, all sorts of coloured bars, then the
white screen, oops something has gone wrong.
i'm not sure if this is relevant, but in my game I'd want to know, maybe the
issue is actually a bad driver?
Best regards
