You're wrong. Please read
<
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/rscheidegger/dri_experimental/s3tc_index.html>
carefully, specifically the "How to install" part.
I've read this
page one year ago, and I seem to have a good memory, quoting:
"So, in principle, you might not even need the external library..."
I can expect that installing this will enable opengl functions likes
GL_S3_s3tc, GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc (If it actually work). Because
thoses implementation can possibly be fully compliant to the standard. I would
like to evaluate the difference between having this library and using
force_s3tc_enable=true". At least, testing with quake3, GL_S3_s3tc remained
ignored in both cases with my radeon x600se.
So despite the page list some possibly supported hardware( where my own
hardware is not), I wonder if this code is still supported with the current
mesa version, since the top of the page says:
"Note: this page is no longer updated and the code no longer maintained."
Which app have you tested to evaluate if the library works ?
