Because it's your job as a packager to make things work out of the box.
Requiring the user to set environment variables is just plain not acceptable.
You could set them in /etc/profile.d, but that's a suboptimal solution because
the new environment variables will only be picked up by newly-started shells,
so the software doesn't work right after installation. Patching the source code
is the more robust solution.
