I agree with Andrea that the best way to do this is to make a new review request for mame.
SDLmame can be safely Provides/Obsoletes by mame.

OK, the package overhaul could definitely use a review. As a related
question: is any of you using the intermediate sdlmame releases from
testing? These are going to be more painful to produce, it seems, so I'm
wondering if it's worth the effort.
