I'm speaking as a total noob with porting to ffmpeg's API changes:
I've found that the upstream projects can be really helpful here. For
example, XBMC had ffmpeg 0.11 compatibility in master branch already,
and I spun my wheels for a while before it occurred to me to look at
master.
