There are some followups which probably make the code look even different.
I see that ffmpeg-0.6.3 from ffmpeg.org also doesn't have
av_register_protocol2, I guess the patch series or some variant of it was
applied there too. (And the #if FF_API_OLD_AVIO isn't there, so working
around the breakage is not as simple as that, unfortunately.) I can't check
the history because I can't find the git.ffmpeg.org tree, even ffmpeg.org
points to git.videolan.org which is actually libav!? git.ffmpeg.org shows me
only the front page. (Might this be related to MPlayer git being down as per
http://mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html ? Or is this an effect of the fork?)
I also looked at libav-0.6.2 from libav.org (They don't seem to have a 0.6.3
with the security fixes yet. Their 0.6.2 is from March, so it doesn't have
them.) and the code there looks the same as in ffmpeg-0.6.3,
av_register_protocol2 removed completely.
Why they made that kind of incompatible changes in a stable branch (and
without a soname bump at that), I don't know!
BTW, which of the forks are we going to ship moving on from now? FFmpeg or
Videolan Libav? Is it too early to tell?

Dunno. Has this ffmpeg ever been in testing/14 and for how long?
It's trivial to try audacious-plugins-freeworld-ffaudio and crash
Audacious. I boot F-15 by default, however, and only return to F-14
on specific requests.

git.ffmpeg.org shows me only the front page. (Might this be related to
MPlayer git being down as per http://mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html ? Or
is this an effect of the fork?)
Actually, git.videolan.org is the FFmpeg tree, not the libav one. They have
the commit which renames things to libav, but they reverted it:

The Libav tree is at git.libav.org.
BTW, which of the forks are we going to ship moving on from now?

So I checked the history (at git.videolan.org), 0.6 never had
av_register_protocol2 to begin with, only master. 0.6 still uses the old

av_register_protocol instead, which Audacious has support for. I think you
need to rebuild audacious against 0.6, possibly with this patch:

(if it isn't already applied in the version we have).
What to do for 0.7, I don't know. We may have to build 0.7 in F15 with
FF_OLD_AVIO enabled.

the process of branching for F15 kicked off(²), there are just 3 1/2
weeks left before F15 gets released
(¹) the plan is to hand them to Nicolas, but for various reasons that
got delayed; I'm really sorry for that; Nicolas please poke me harder to
hand them over once we are both back home (I'm at the Red Hat Summit
next week and back on May 9th)
(²) due to (¹) and the tight schedule for F15 I hereby commit myself to
do the actually branching of the repos on the download servers for a
last time; but someone from the infra team needs to update the builders,
CVS and things like that in a coordinated fashion

I was trying to but I don't yet have CVS access and Ryan can't do
anything about it until this weekend. My vote is still to downgrade to
0.6.2 (which would still be an upgrade from 0.5.x) which seems to work
well (or least poorly) for Openshot and probably Kdenlive. That should
give Ryan and I time to figure out if we need to wait for a 0.7.X
point release or git version that fixes the playback issues.

I grated you access to mlt in CVS -- seems that is the right thing to do
here. Let me know if it doesn't work.
My vote is still to downgrade to
0.6.2 (which would still be an upgrade from 0.5.x) which seems to work

give Ryan and I time to figure out if we need to wait for a 0.7.X

Chances are not many people will have it installed, because the only thing
in the stable repos that uses mlt is kdenlive and it wants the old soname.

Ryan's been dealing with finals at school so we're a bit delayed.
Since Openshot uses python bindings instead of using MLT directly it
can go to stable but 1.3.1 is already out so I was waiting to see if
we were going to get another point release of MLT with the video
preview bug fixed before building it. As a backup plan I do have a git
version of mlt with the bug fix that builds and I have one openshot
user report saying it works.
Also, in the meantime, kdenlive 0.8 has been released.
I guess the build/release of MLT and Kdenlive will need to be
synchronized. How exactly do we do that? I figure mlt will need to be
built first so it will be available to buildsys before kdenlive can be
built, right?
So assuming my logic is correct, we need to:
1. Get a new build of mlt, either (relatively) current git now or wait
for a point release.
2. Get it pushed into testing.
3. Build Kdenlive 0.8 and OpenShot 1.3.1
4. Push both into stable?co
I mention #4 with a question mark because I have provided OpenShot
1.3.1 packages through my google docs and already have some positive
user reports and I have tested it myself with good results. I also
built Kdenlive 0.8 but I don't know if anyone has used it yet.
As a side note, frei0r-plugins 1.3 has been released upstream which I
know OpenShot uses... I'd be willing to be a co-maintainer of it if
Nicolas doesn't mind or could use the help. I see his name on a lot of
packages...

In RPM Fusion, we have a particularity. Once a package is built, it
hits the buildroot directly.
So once mlt is built, you can build kdelive and openshot right after.
Then everything can be pushed to !{testing}! before anything goes into stable.

Sorry, I could have worded things better. I made a mock build of
Kdenlive 0.8 on my own machine completely outside of RPMFusion. At
first only to test it with the git version of mlt I built but figured
I might as well make it available for others to test while Ryan was
busy at school.
If I understand your response correctly then you are saying I should
request cvs/ACL access to Kdenlive? If Ryan would like to add me as a
co-maintainer of Kdenlive to have some redundant coverage then I would
be happy to volunteer.

Ok, how do I detect an ABI breakage? Since Openshot is python based
I'm not sure it cares, but I'd have to see what all uses it.
