Description:
Linphone is mostly sip compliant. It works successfully with these
implementations:
* eStara softphone (commercial software for windows)
* Pingtel phones (with DNS enabled and VLAN QOS support disabled).
* Hotsip, a free of charge phone for Windows.
* Vocal, an open source SIP stack from Vovida that includes a SIP proxy
that works with linphone since version 0.7.1.
* Siproxd is a free sip proxy being developed by Thomas Ries because he
would like to have linphone working behind his firewall. Siproxd is
simple to setup and works perfectly with linphone.
* Partysip aims at being a generic and fully functionnal SIP proxy. Visit
the web page for more details on its functionalities.
Linphone may work also with other sip phones, but this has not been tested yet.
I am moving this to rpmfussion because video support needs ffmpeg-devel and
some discussion is already at:

would need a review as update hasn't been done for long.

We do not allow replacement of package from fedora.
linphone exists in fedora hence we cannot replace it.
Hence such package is rejected in it's current shape .
If ffmpeg support in linphone can be built as a module, then linphone-ffmpeg
can eventually be introduced in rpmfusion to extend fedora's linphone
capabilities.
If such modular built cannot be done, the other way is to build a
linphone-freeworld that can eventually conflicts with fedora's linphone or use
alternatives in order not to use conflict
Please re-open once you have choosed your way.

totally against workarounding the problem that way.
Until linphone can build without ffmpeg and still be usable, linphone has no
reason to be removed from fedora.
Once that said, that's only my personal opinion, and if that question is raised
publicly in fedora-devel mailing list (which could eventually prevent someone
else to take over a ffmpeg-less linphone ), I will not be against having one
single version provided by rpmfusion.
For the record, we cannot decently have the same package that comes from both
repository because if one enable rpmfusion to install another package, it may
update linphone to the rpmfusion version either or not such update was expected
by any casual end-users. That's not acceptable at all.

Just FYI, I managed to do this for picard (Fedora) and picard-freeworld (RPM
Fusion) packages because of ffmpeg issues. This was possible because the
ffmpeg functionality was restricted to a single shared library:
# rpm -ql picard-freeworld
/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/picard/musicdns/avcodec.so
It's a bit of a pain, I have one spec that compiles without ffmpeg on Fedora,
then I take the same spec on RPM Fusion but modify it to add BR: ffmpeg-devel
strip out everything but the single shared library. But it works.
If linphone can be modularized the same way, that's a possible solution and I
could help with that.

I would agree as the maintainer of audacity
(working from what was previously
in livna), that it isn't ideal. But without someone to write code to allow the
rpmfusion only stuff (ffmpeg import/export and mp3 capability) as a plugin, I
guess it won't change.
In this case, I understand that I would have to replace the executable provided
by fedora. Any better ideas are welcome ;-)

Reminds that replacing the binary and replacing the package are different
things.
And One can avoid replacing binaries with using alternatives. Please have a
look on OpenEXR_Viewers-nonfree for a sample.

Well, to sum up what I wrote in the Fedora bug report:
* This package also ships a shared library, libmediastreamer, which can be used
by Kopete to support voice chatting with Google Talk Jingle (currently, we ship
an old implementation of the Jingle protocol which didn't use libmediastreamer)
and WLM (currently disabled in the Fedora package, we support WLM only for
text, not voice). But we'd need libmediastreamer in Fedora, not RPM Fusion, to
build that stuff. But voice-only (which is what we get without FFmpeg) is
probably sufficient. (I'd have to check though.) So I'm not happy with this
being only in RPM Fusion at all, we should target the "2 versions" solution.
* The problem is that video support:
- requires FFmpeg, even for Theora, because the whole data structures are based
on FFmpeg structures. :-/
- is a compile-time decision for libmediastreamer, not a plugin.
- is a compile-time decision even for the Linphone application, so it's not
just a matter of replacing the library, the whole stack has to be replaced. :-(
