Hi!
I imported a lot of livna packages over the past week into RPM Fusion's
CVS and tried to build them. A good bunch of packages just built fine
(see below). I'll try to get them into the public repo later.
But there were a lot of problems (see below as well). For a few packages
I was unsure what to import exactly; some others require some smaller
changes which I (for now) wanted to leave up to the maintainers to not
step on peoples toes. Thus:
IMPORTANT: If you
- maintain a package in livna and want to continue maintaining it in RPM
Fusion
- if you want to take over a livna package for RPM Fusion
then *please* take the time now and read this mail to check the status
of your package.
If there are problems with them please help getting them fixed quickly.
Especially if one of your packages is needed by other packages for
building then please help getting the issues solved *as soon as
possible*, otherwise RPM Fusion will get delayer even further and you
create additional work for everyone else, as everything needs to be
maintained in both RPM Fusion and Livna in parallel until RPM Fusion starts.

I might have found the root cause for those build problems. Looking

I might have found the root cause for those build problems.
--verbose: ffmpeg-libs.fc9.x86_64 was truncated somehow and thus didn't
install correctly. I don't know why that happened; I tried to rebuild it
and it happened again; I can it another try and it worked just fine. No
idea why, sorry.
Anyway: Actually it was only the root cause for once of the build
problems mentioned above (vdr-dxr3, to be precise). The others k9copy,
qmmp-plugins-freeworld and gstreamer-ffmpeg still fail. They need to be
patched here and in devel for the new ffmpeg location.
Dan Horák/sharkcz did that earlier today for kino. His patch can be found at

Hans took another approach and in

that package in the past use another package now. Was it dvdread? Can't
remember, but I think so; it iirc uses the package in question
dynamically if needed.

buildable...
About the other package. I'm not going to touch that package ever
in RPM
Fusion and I more and more agree with those people that asked not to
ship it. So IOW: Somebody else needs to branch, import, build and sign

Okay, I'll poke around some... Ah, okay, not a build dependency, just
currently set as a runtime dependency. The only thing it needs to build

I created a owners.list entry and created a branch for libfame in CVS.
But I suppose you don't have commit access yet -- seems I'm doing
something wrong when creating branches and thus the ACLs are set
incorrectly (or better: not at all). Xavier hasn't told be yet what I'm
doing wrong or how to fix the ACLs :-/
Nevertheless there is something you can do in between:

have already done that by branching, importing and signing MPlayer
builds. MPlayer contains a copy of libdvdcss.

Yes, libdvdread uses libdvdcss to access CSS-restricted content.

distributing an binary app or lib that is directly able to circumvent
css is afaik.

Indeed, but users still need to get that package from somewhere.
And I'd say that "somewhere" is the better place (¹) as having a
compiled libdvdcss in the repos in my humble opinion might be
problematic for these reasons:
* we already lost one major long-term Fedora and Livna contributor
from Europe because he feared to contribute to a repo that might contain
libdvdcss.
* There are likely a lot more Fedora contributors that won't
contribute to RPM Fusion (livna showed that in the past) as long as
there is a package like libdvdcss in the repos, as libdvdcss is one
level more problematic that all the other stuff we have.
* I hope that we in the long term can cooperate with proprietary
software companies to get their software (things like flash, adobe
reader and similar stuff) into our nonfree repo; that will liekly never
work if we have libdvdcss in the repo
* it could create trouble for people mirroring or using RPM Fusion;
thus some people will decide not to mirror or use RPM Fusion

I can't comment on that. AFAIK it is not illegal in Poland, unless
there's a EU-wide legislation that makes it illegal.

I know, but the source here in Germany is not the problem afaik; OTHO

And I'd say that "somewhere" is the better place (¹) as having a
compiled libdvdcss in the repos in my humble opinion might be
problematic for these reasons:
* we already lost one major long-term Fedora and Livna contributor
from Europe because he feared to contribute to a repo that might contain
libdvdcss.
* There are likely a lot more Fedora contributors that won't
contribute to RPM Fusion (livna showed that in the past) as long as
there is a package like libdvdcss in the repos, as libdvdcss is one
level more problematic that all the other stuff we have.

Seems six weeks ago when I wrote this mail I forgot one important piece:
- having libdvdcvs in one of our repos could lead to projects or
cooperation's not to mention or link to us. That's not limited to Fedora
or Red Hat (see the mail from rpmfusion-users I just replied to); also
some journalists and howto-writers will also chose to *not* mention RPM
Fusion and thus not link to us

As you'll notice, my options regarding libdvdcss did not change.
If we ship libdvdcss in one of our repos we will ship a package that is
way more bad (read as: known to be illegal not only in the US, but also
in more than a few other country's) than all the other packages we have;
that's creates more trouble for users, contributors and thus RPM Fusion
than it solves.
Thus I'm still all for leaving libdvdcss out; livna, freshrpms or a
brand new, small repo dedicated to just libdvdcss could ship it. Heck it
IMHO shouldn't hurt us much if we help users to get it from there
magically/automatically as long as libdvdcss is not directly in our repos.

It's a compressed patch and CVS afaics doesn't handle binaries very well
(svn iirc does, do in livna it would have been acceptable).

Patches need to be added "cvs add -kb", otherwise chances are cvs could
corrupt them, when patches contain patterns which match cvs metatags

verified by local builds) and all gstreamer plugins which weren't build are
building on the buildsys now.
